Herce joins as Global Sales Director in a newly created role leading the sales of&nbsp;Hotelbeds’ full portfolio of products including accommodation, transfers, car hire, tickets and excursions&nbsp;via the wholesale, retail travel agents, airlines and B2B2C business lines (including the Bedsonline and Hotelopia brands).

In addition to his role as Sales Director, Herce will become a member of the company’s Executive Committee.

Previously Herce spent over 15 years at travel technology company Amadeus, most recently as global head of the retail business. Previously he&nbsp;held roles such as VP for Latin America &amp; the Caribbean, VP Sales &amp; Marketing for Asia-Pacific, and Director of Group Controlling &amp; Commercial Finance.

León Herce joins Hotelbeds as Global Sales Director


	Hotelbeds registering double-digit growth compared to previous year.

Palma, August 1st 2019. Hotelbeds, the world’s leading bedbank, today announced a double-digit percentage increase in room night sales for the Balearic Islands, with more than 30% growth in the last eight weeks, when compared to the previous summer.

This strong growth for Hotelbeds contrasts with a season of lower demand and average rates for this summer when compared to previous years in the Balearic Islands and, therefore, demonstrates the great value that Hotelbeds offers to hoteliers by making available its extensive network of 60,000 B2B travel trade clients in a period of low occupancy.

In fact, this growth has been led by the increase in reservations of high-value B2B clients for hoteliers, such as retail travel agencies, traditional tour operators and airlines, whose travelers cancel less, book further in advance, spend more in destination and comeback more often.

Although the main source market for the company is the UK, followed by Spain, it is the German market that has registered an increase above 50% when compared to last year.

Germany, in contrast to the experience of the market, is the main driver of growth for the company in the Balearic Islands, supported by other markets with a significant increase such as Holland, France, Italy and Switzerland. Altogether Hotelbeds has attracted this summer B2B clients from more than 100 source markets to the Balearic Islands.

At the same time it is necessary to highlight as one of the key factors behind this success the preferred agreements that Hotelbeds has with some high-value hoteliers, which offers great stability in booking volumes for hoteliers and competitive rates for customers.

Marina Pérez Zanutel, Director of Contracting for the Balearic Islands at Hotelbeds adds: “Although the general occupancy rate this summer seems to be low in many Balearic hotels, and the RevPAR average has decreased, the increase in our reservations proves the value we bring to hoteliers, offering them more reservations where and when they need them most. In fact, out platform now has five times more availability in August than last year, which demonstrates the great contracting work our local team is doing.

“At Hotelbeds, additionally we are increasing market share in an environment of complicated demand and strong competition from destinations such as Turkey, Greece, Tunisia or Egypt. Our preferred agreements help us meet the strong demand for our distribution channel.”

Currently Hotelbeds is registering advanced sales for 2020, especially from traditional source markets such as the United Kingdom and Germany. Taking advantage of this dynamic, Hotelbeds is focusing its efforts on contracting more accommodation to support hoteliers on the islands to fill their rooms for next year.

Hotelbeds announces strong increase in tourist reservations this summer for the Balearic Islands

Did you know that there were around four billion passengers carried on airplanes last year? But with profit margins so low many airlines are trying to increase margins by cross-selling their customers hotel accommodation – and this represents a huge opportunity for hoteliers.

Ancillary revenues for airlines – extra leg-room, baggage, in-flight sales and more – were around 100 billion US dollars last year according to Idea Works Company, a leading consultancy in this area.

But how much of that was accommodation spend? Whilst many of those flying already had plans for where to stay when booking their flight, many did not – and they bought their hotel via the airline.&nbsp;

The same study values the hotel, car, and insurance elements of ancillary revenues to be around 3 billion dollars in total, and at Hotelbeds we estimate the hotel part to be worth around two billion dollars and growing fast! This shows that the B2B airline sales channel is a huge opportunity for hoteliers worldwide to maximize their distribution reach and increase RevPAR.

Now, not all airlines have the right customer profile to be relevant in this space : from the 700 or so commercial airlines existing in the world today, we estimate that only about 120 are offering accommodation sales. But that still represents a sizeable opportunity.

But why should hoteliers distribute their rooms via the B2B airlines sales channel? Customers booking a flight will often look to reserve accommodation right after they book a flight, or in the case of packaging at the same time they book a flight. When better to be present than right at the moment when the intent to purchase is highest?

Ultimately airlines are able to attract high-value bookings that are hard to get via another channel, including the hotel’s own dot com (no matter the price or uniqueness of the offer).

What is more, typically airline customers are high-value guests with low cancellation rates, that return more often, spend more in destination, pay more per night, book further in advance and additionally are more likely to be from international source markets. All in all, airlines are able to help a hotel increase RevPAR.

As a result, more and more, airlines are acting as a retailer rather than just only selling airline tickets via their websites. This also means that airlines don´t just sell accommodation to clients who purchase a flight, but also through loyalty programs, their call centre and even via employee benefits programmes. The result? An airline can sell accommodation not just to destinations it services, but anywhere in the world.

At Hotelbeds we are currently working with more than 40 airlines worldwide such as easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways, Virgin, Finnair and Jet2&nbsp;in Europe, Spirit, Air Canada, LATAM, Volaris and Azul in the Americas. &nbsp;More recently in Asia, we launched a partnership with Singapore Airlines to use our dynamic packaging platform for Singapore Airline holidays in around 20 of its key source markets.

Hotelbeds announces Bali as host destination for 2nd edition of MarketHub Asia

Saying goodbye to disposable items is not news in the hospitality industry. As a Chinese person travelling to the United States and many European countries, I have long since noticed that there are very few hotels providing toothbrushes or slippers anymore. Travelers have become used to bringing their own toiletries.

But in my native China the use of disposable toiletries is still standard practice in hotels everywhere. And when many of us travel abroad we are surprised to not find these available in our rooms – and mildly inconvenienced as we hadn´t packed many of these items in our bag.

Given that China now has more outbound tourists than any other country – and the number of nights abroad and the average spend per trip are increasing rapidly too&nbsp; – the Chinese traveller’s preference for disposable toiletries poses a serious challenge for hoteliers. And for the environment too!

The good news is that change is happening.

As of July 1, new trash management regulations came into effect in Shanghai that are very progressive. This regulation also bans hotels from automatically offering in the room six disposable necessities such as toothbrushes, combs, razors, bath scrubs, emery boards, and one-time use shoe polish.

A small measure? Not really, small actions make big differences. According to Meadin Tourism Institute, this new regulation would impact more than 13,000 hotels in Shanghai that together host millions of guests per year.

But understandably Hoteliers in China do have some concerns about the inconvenience that this is bringing to travelers and increasing operational costs for hotels. Firstly, because the front desk needs to explain this new regulation to customers – many of whom come from regions of China unaffected by the new law – to make sure customers understand there won’t be these six disposable necessities in their room.

Meanwhile, the hotel then has to respect the needs of guests and provide these necessities on request – which they are allowed to do, provided the guest requests them at the reception. This has increased labor costs.

How should Western hotel chains react to this challenge? They could take some lessons from the Shanghai hotels going through this problem for the first time: communication is key – and guests need to be told in advance, possibly even within the booking flow.

At Hotelbeds have been working with our hotel partners around the world for many years to help them make their products ‘China ready’. Doing so is about so much more than just food or language, as this issue around disposables demonstrate.

We at Hotelbeds take environmental protection issues very seriously and encourage our colleagues in offices all around the world to do so too. In China last year we joined a local beach cleanup program organized by HandsOn Shanghai, a non-profit organization.

Together we picked up 137.6 kilos of trash at beach, a great deal of which turned out sadly to be disposable items.

This has made us more determined than ever to resolve this issue and we feel that as a distributor we can influence this by helping our partners to understand and set expectations in the booking process. Whilst we recognize that different markets evolve at different speeds, we are convinced that together we can bin disposables!

ABS braking revolutionized car safety decades ago, but could a very different type of ABS be about to revolutionise the hotel industry?

Yes, we are talking about ‘attribute based selling’, the slightly confusing label that is the latest buzzword in hospitality circles.

In fact, there were several discussions around this topic during the recent HEDNA Conference in Madrid last month, where I participated as guest speaker on stage.

But what does the term really mean? Attribute-based selling is the idea that instead of selling hotel rooms by room category, guests can instead take a ‘pick and mix’ approach to control their own purchase path.

For example, they could put together features they care for most and not purchase elements they don’t really wish to pay for – such as choosing a basic room for €50with no breakfast included, but adding a king size bed for an extra€50 along with a sea view for another €20.

This seems nothing short of revolutionary in hotel circles. But is it really such a groundbreaking idea? The airline industry shifted to this model well over a decade ago. Low-cost carriers in particular have mastered the art of unbundling services that used to come with the ticket, such as baggage fees, travel insurance, speedy boarding, onboard meals or seat selection.

Whilst at first passenger reactions to this new approach were negative, eventually most of us have grown used to only paying for what we use.

Already some hoteliers are starting to recognize the two core benefits for our industry: offering guests products that better match their individual needs (or ‘personalization’ as many call it) and the opportunity to further maximize revenue.

But how should hotels adapt to offer consumers such a choice? And how should the hotel distribution chain in turn adapt accordingly?

Right now the hotel distribution ecosystem is beginning a journey of transformation that will fundamentally change the way inventory is mapped, categorized, priced and sold – all in a standardized fashion. This will no doubt require new technologies and protocols, not least for third parties such as travel agents or bedbanks.&nbsp;

The goal of this strategic plan is to add 14,000 new travel agent customers – focusing in particular on luxury travel agents and those specialising in high-value, long-haul bookings – in the coming next three years, taking the total to over 64,000 travel agents globally.

Palma, 19th June 2019. Hotelbeds, the world’s leading bedbank, has announced today a preferred partnership agreement with HotelRunner, a sales channel management platform and B2B network for OTAs and hotels.

With this agreement HotelRunner increases its connectivity partnership program by helping its 35,000 hotel, hostel and vacation rental partners reach the over 60,000 travel trade buyers that use the Hotelbeds booking platform – including tour operators, travel agencies, airlines and points redemption schemes in over 185 source markets.

As a result of gaining access to Hotelbed’s travel trade buyers the accommodation partners of HotelRunner will benefit from incremental reservations from non-domestic markets via&nbsp; Hotelbeds global distribution channels that generate high-value bookings with guests that, on average, book earlier, cancel less, stay for longer and spend twice as much in destination.

With this partnership, HotelRunner will assist Hotelbeds to access significant additional hotel partners globally, with wider coverage in Turkey, Africa, LATAM and South East Asia.

As of today China-based hoteliers will have access to a Chinese domain version of MaxiRoom, the Hotelbeds free hotel extranet that was launched in 2015. MaxiRoom is designed to control and maximize hotel occupancy rates through Hotelbeds’ distribution channels in a faster, smarter and easier way.

Chinese hoteliers will be able to access MaxiRoom via a Chinese domain –&nbsp; https://www.maxiroom.cn – allowing them to access Maxiroom without facing any restrictions and in Chinese.

Hotelbeds launches Chinese domain for its hotel extranet 


	Over 700 attendees at MarketHub Americas and Europe events – made up of travel agencies, tour operators, airlines and points redemption partners – were surveyed on their technology views.
	Only 18% of those surveyed felt their mobile consumer website “best in class” and only 24% have adopted machine learning capacity.
	Many B2C travel companies in Europe admitted that their business has “no near future plans to embrace blockchain”, with only 11% having already adopted the technology.


Palma,&nbsp; 13th June 2019 – Hotelbeds, the world´s nº1 leading bedbank, has today released details of the audience surveys conducted at its recent MarketHub Americas and Europe events held last May in Cancun and Istanbul respectively.

Participants at both MarketHub events – which were attended by over 700 senior representatives from travel agencies, tour operators, airlines and points redemption partners from across the Americas and Europe– took part in audience surveys digitally during the conference sessions. Attendees responded to a series of questions about their views and understanding of technology.

The results showed that whilst the B2C travel companies are aware of the importance of technology to drive growth in their businesses, nevertheless many intermediaries in the B2C space are struggling to respond to the challenges of new technology – and could boost their business by both improving their technology and their understanding of its benefits.

When attendees at the MarketHub Americas event were asked “How do you rate your consumer mobile website?”, 44% of respondents said they needed a little help, 23% said they needed a lot of help, 6% admitted they were awful in this area, and 9% admitted to not having a site. Only 18% felt their mobile consumer site to be best in class.

Additionally, the results showed that machine learning still represents a huge opportunity for B2C travel companies. Only 24% were able to confirm that their business was currently using machine learning, with 10% having plans to introduce machine learning and 6% having no plans. Interestingly, 38% weren´t sure if their business was using machine learning or not.

MarketHub Europe audience results showed that around 78% of the attendees admitted that their business has “no near future plans to embrace blockchain”, with only 11% having already adopted the technology and the small remainder planning to do so in the coming 12 months.

When asked about marketing automation in their business, 14% of the European event attendees didn’t know if their business was using it and 15% confirmed they weren’t using it at all; an additional 37% revealed they were only using the most basic of automation techniques, with only 22% feeling themselves “reasonably advanced” and just 11% feeling themselves “advanced”.

Carlos Muñoz, Bedbank Managing Director at&nbsp;Hotelbeds&nbsp;commented: “Part of our motivation for organizing these events is to gain an insight into the knowledge and needs of our customers, and these audience surveys are fantastic means of gaining instant feedback in a way that could never happen via an email or phone survey.

“For me these results show the role that providers such as ourselves play in the travel distribution ecosystem, supporting B2B travel trade buyers to help them respond to technological evolution and the ever increasing needs of consumers.

“Through events such as these and the experience and support of our in-house IT and product management teams, we supply our B2B2C customers with the knowledge and tools to remain competitive and profitable – whilst fulfilling the same role with our hotelier partners, to connect the two together seamlessly.

“For instance, our booking platform can have peaks of up to 3 billion searches per day, something few individual companies could cope with; so much data additionally gives us great insight into consumer desire, something we then feed back to our hotelier partners to make sure they are providing the right product, at the right price, to the right buyer, at the right moment. ”
